Produce packaging in the US is rapidly changing as technology continues to unwrap innovative options reflecting consumer convenience and product freshness.

Although once a tried and true packaging method, ordinary packaging trays and boxes are being redesigned, improved on and passed into the market each day.

Demand for produce packaging growing

A recent report from the research firm, the Freedonia Group, predicts that demand for produce packaging in the U.S. will reach nearly $6 billion by 2017. This growth rate is expected to outpace fresh produce production.  In addition, increased nutritional awareness is expected to lead to a growth in the consumption of fruits and produce as part of a healthier lifestyle.

Such predictions pose a number of implications for the food industry.  Historically, the produce industry turned to corrugated boxes due to their versatility, broad marketability, confirmed safety and minimal shipping weight.

Unconventional produce packaging coming to the forefront

New solutions are predicted to show robust growth in the coming years. Reusable plastic containers are expected to grow the fastest over the next three or more years. The decision to use these containers or the conventional corrugated cardboard ones has been the subject of debate recently. According to Packaging Digest, a recent study from the University of Guelph indicated that 64 percent of RPCs failed sanitary standards due to poor cleaning practices.

Other methods of packaging produce are expected to emerge as well. For instance, molded trays that are fabricated from compostable fibers could see increased usage as demands for more green-friendly products are answered.

New presentation methods dictate containers

While the market is being shaped by innovative green packaging alternatives, consumer demand is reaching for added convenience - freshly cut and packaged fruits and vegetables.  A new product, produced by Sirane Food Packaging,  "Dri-Fresh soft-hold" fruit cushioning pads,  "revolutionized" the food market.

These cushioning pads provide added benefits such as:

  • reduction of waste
  • increased shelf life
  • anti-fungal properties
  • absorbent
  • cost reduction both in packaging and shipping

Products such as cushioning pads and "smart packaging" alternatives formulated by Sealpac and Shieltronics are just the onset of flexible packaging options supporting both convenience and quality to the produce market demand.
