Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) is used for primary packaging. Never being combined with other methods of corrosion protection, VCI is a product that must be understood before use. When the VCI material is brought next to a metal surface the molecules that prevent corrosion are transformed into a vapor. The corrosion inhibiting vapor is then attracted to the metallic surface. The VCI molecules create a layer of 3-5 molecules across the surface of the metal. Despite the narrow layer of protection the metal is well guarded from corrosion because the molecules in place prevent oxidation and stop the flow of electrons in the metal, neutralizing the natural polarization of the metal. This combination, in addition to the protection against salt and dirt, effectively stops corrosion. As a molecular layer on the surface of metal, VCI operates as protection, but can be a harmful product if not used correctly.

VCI Guidelines to Consider for Protection:

  • Products made out of ferrous or non ferrous metal material should be packed upon time of production. All items should be packed free from moisture, dust, dirt and rust. If corrosion is already present, VCI material will not repair or reverse effects.
  • VCI should not be held in stock for more than six months. All unused material should be kept in original packing and stored in a cool, dry area. It should be stored somewhere away from moisture or heat before use.
  • Between the product to be protected and the VCI material there should be no more than 6 inches. There should be no barrier between the VCI material and the metal surface the product being protected.
  • VCI products are meant for industrial use only.
  • If packing objects that are steel via wrapping, 70% of VCI film should be used.
