Here are some facts about Polystyrene/EPS Foam and it’s impact on the Environment:

  • Expanded EPS is comprised of 98 percent air making it the most lightweight, high impact, packaging material available. It also has an ultra-low carbon footprint.
  • Polystyrene reduces fuel consumption in two different ways: Due to it’s weight it reduces fuel consumption during transit; Also, it helps protect, minimizing breakage and re-delivery.
  • When expanded EPS is recyclable. It is recycled each year into items such as clothes hangers, cameras, plastic decking, outdoor furniture and other various items. For more information about EPS recycling opportunities contact your closest EPS manufacturer.
  • Expanded polystyrene is free of CFC’s and HCFC’s. Pentane released during the EPS manufacturing process quickly turns into carbon dioxide and water in a photochemical reaction.
  • The styrene used in the creation process also exists naturally in fruit, vegetables, wine and even beans.
  • Only a fraction of the carbon monoxide of wood or cardboard is released into the environment during the combustion of expanded EPS.
  • Due to technological advanced like CAD, minimum waste occurs during the cutting phase, so large amounts are not discarded, and those that are can be recycled. It’s a win win situation for the environment.
  • Water is re-used several times during the manufacturing of expanded polystyrene and oil usage is kept to a minimum.
